Exhibition: SEAmaps

open from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m.
MEDIENKULTURHAUS WELS

The Puppet Theatre Festival Wels and the Medien Kultur Haus have been closely connected for many years through good cooperation.

With the exhibition of Karin Schäfer in 2020, we are further deepening this connection. An almost logical development, because the boundaries between visual and performing arts in puppet theatre are and always have been fluid. At first glance, Karin Schäfer's SEAmaps look like maps: with peculiar, partly familiar forms of cities, countries and continents, but in an impossible combination. Just as the edges of old sea charts were adorned with images of ships, gods, weather events and demons, so these SEAmaps bring people, things and symbols into the present. The same as for Karin Schäfer's visual theatre works applies here: the true adventures, the possible and impossible stories emerge in the mind of the viewer.

„For me, land and sea charts are abstract and yet ‘true’ representations of the world: although they seem to depict reality, they always trigger subjective, poetic, yearning feelings. I translate these feelings into my maps: the SEAmaps.“

The exhibition is a place of rest, of daydreaming, of drifting into one's own imagination. Deckchairs and the sounds of the sea invite you to do so.
We also offer a workshop for school classes (pupils aged 8+). Further informations...

Karin SchäferAbout the artist:

The Karin Schäfer Figurentheater is an independent theatre from Austria with performances in over 45 countries. Working with theatre, dance, puppets, masks, animated films, light and shadow, and projections Karin Schäfer creates her very special form of "visual theatre". She has received broad international recognition for her work and has won numerous prizes and awards. This regularly leads her and her team to guest performances and festivals around the globe.

In recent years Karin Schäfer has increasingly devoted herself to the visual arts: her SEAmaps are large-format collages around the theme of longing for the sea.
