The rich merchants of Wels lived on the town square in their representative citizens' houses, usually with arches courtyards and gardens or small parks. In the rear houses in the area of today's Freiung, their storage rooms were situated. So also in the house Stadtplatz 46, the so-called 'halfway house', the former grain warehouse which "The Kornspeicher" is.

In the 20th century they wanted to demolish the building twice to expand the Plobergerstraße. Fortunately, this failed on protest of the neighbours. After several uses, for instance as Custodian of the Red Cross, in 1941, the building was set up as a "puppet house". In 1952, in the name changed to "cultural home"; the hall in the 1st floor was used for lectures of the "Volkshochschule", theatre performances and events.

Finally in 1985 according to plans by architect Carl ODORIZZI the rebuilding to the current arena theatre was realized. Every year approximately 80 events take place.
