Already in the Roman era there has been played theatre in Wels, in this house here since 1904. The former  theatre building  on the east side of the Kaiser-Josef-Platz was unsustainable. A small fire was in 1903 and through the sensitized public caused by the ring theatre fire move was urgently necessary. The responsible member for the theatre community committee had made a protest about the conditions of the stage area behind his office, whereupon Mayor Dr. Schauer shut the old theatre.
Within a short time has been moved into the festival and concert hall of the hotel at your fingertips, then first house on the square, and decided the room in record time to the theater hall.

Within a short time has been moved into the ceremony and concert hall of the "Hotel zum Greifen", the first house on the square, and then they decided to rebuild  the room to the theatre  hall in record time. In 1916 there has even been negotiated because of  a renewed reconstruction in a representative theatre with 1,200 seats. The project was never realized, and it remained at the 620-seats room, partly protected monument. On 25 December 1944  the theatre was hit of 7 bombs and totally destroyed. In the years 1946 / 48  the new building has been realized, and from that date was also started  the cinema operation, which was continued regularly until the 70s , the Tuesday was "Theatre-day".

In 1957, the stage was modernized  through the installation of a revolving stage and the Iron Curtain prescribed. In 1988, the whole stage house with dressing rooms and 23m high grid was rebuilt. It turned out that both sides of the stage towers rested on a foundation of Roman debris.

In 1989, the city leased the City Theatre for a long term. The city's theatre is used  for theatre and concert events, cinema, presentations and representative cultural and social events.
